Weekend Adventures for Undergraduates at UT Arlington: Exploring DFW’s Cultural Riches

I did my master's in Construction Management at the University of Texas at Arlington (UT Arlington) in 2016-2017. During that time, I enjoyed a vibrant campus life and discovered many ways to spend weekends in and around Arlington. Whether you are a UT Arlington student or just visiting, there are numerous exciting activities and attractions to explore in the DFW Metroplex.

On-Campus Amenities

UT Arlington offers a multitude of amenities that provide students with ample options for socializing and relaxation. Students can hang out at the University Center, which features a food court and recreational sports facilities. The Maverick Activities Center is another go-to spot for students, featuring a state-of-the-art weight room, two gyms, a tennis court, a jogging track, and an indoor and outdoor pool. The Physical Education Building houses outdoor tennis courts and a swimming pool. Additionally, the University Center has a TV lounge for those looking to unwind with a movie or sports game.

The DFW Metroplex: A Rich Tapestry of Attractions

The DFW Metroplex is famous for its variety of entertainment options. Arlington sits centrally between Dallas and Fort Worth, making it an ideal base for a weekend of cultural exploration. There are numerous amusement parks like Six Flags, home to thrilling rides and live entertainment, as well as professional sports events. The Rangers and Cowboys play in Arlington, while the Stars provide hockey action in nearby Dallas. Visitors can support their favorite teams at exciting games, year-round.

Outdoor Activities and Parklands

Students at UT Arlington often turn to local parklands for outdoor activities. River Legacy Park is a popular spot for roller blading, playing soccer, or just relaxing. The Fort Worth and Dallas Zoos offer a chance to see exotic animals up close. The historic Fort Worth Stockyards provides a taste of the West, while the Kimbell Art Museum houses an impressive collection of art and artifacts. Dallas and Fort Worth also offer vast shopping options at Galleria Dallas and other local shopping centers.

Nightlife and Campus Events

UT Arlington's campus life is not just limited to the weekends. The campus newspaper or the university itself often announce numerous on-campus events, such as sports events, concerts, plays, and gatherings of various interest groups. If you need help finding events, accessing a vehicle or befriending someone who owns one can be beneficial. Additionally, the city of Arlington's nightlife is thriving, offering a range of activities and entertainment options.

Public Transportation and Traveling by Car

While Arlington has one of the largest population centers in Texas, it still lacks a robust public transportation system. Instead, the city is home to the Dallas Cowboys and Texas Rangers franchises. I’m a firm believer in community transportation systems and would strongly support the development of one in Arlington. Growing up in a large northern city, I remember using an excellent bus system when I was young, which eventually led to a rapid transit system and streetcars. Although we now have modern highways and GPS, a public transportation system would greatly enhance the quality of life for all residents.

Exploring Arlington and the Metroplex

Whether you are staying closer to UT Arlington or venturing out to explore, there's always something exciting to do in the DFW Metroplex.
