The professors and staff have been more than accommodating, and they do not discriminate based on gender. This is a core strength of the institution, and it stands out as a beacon of inclusivity.
The Gender Ratio Dilemma and Unwanted Expectations
One of the most significant challenges I have faced at IIT Delhi is the gender ratio. The highly skewed ratio, often around 10 boys to every girl, creates an environment where girls are frequently met with unwanted and often inappropriate expectations. It is not uncommon for male students to approach girls with the misguided assumption that they will readily engage in romantic or sexual relationships. This mindset is not unique to IIT Delhi but is unfortunately prevalent in many institutions worldwide.
Common Misconceptions and Excuses
The narrative often perpetuates that these behaviors can be excused due to the unique environment a girl student enters after two years of intense academic focus. Male students, having grown up with strict parental restrictions, are said to be experiencing newfound freedom and accessibility to pornographic content, which supposedly causes a surge in testosterone levels. However, these are nothing more than justifications for inappropriate behavior.
Understanding the Human Factor
Girls at IIT Delhi are not prizes or trophies to be won. We are individuals with our own aspirations, dreams, and qualities. It is not our responsibility to cater to these expectations or to reciprocate romantic interest. Repeated exposure to such behavior can take a toll on both mental and emotional health. It is important to understand that a girl's resistance or lack of interest is a matter of freedom and choice, not a personal affront or lack of 'attitude'.
Two Categories of Male Behaviors
There are two common categories of male students when it comes to female students: those who eagerly pursue opportunities and those who act politely in the beginning but expect unrealistic reciprocation. These behaviors are rooted in a deep sense of entitlement and disrespected boundaries. They assume that simply being kind or attentive will earn them a romantic interest.
