Language Proficiency: From Native Tamil to Multilingual Expertise
Language is a fundamental aspect of human culture and communication. My journey as a language professional is rooted in my native Tamil, the language of the Tamil people, which has a rich literary tradition dating back over 2300 years. Despite centuries of rule by various empires that sought to extinguish Tamil culture and language, it has not only endured but thrived, with its significance and importance akin to the air we breathe. This article explores my language strengths and the diversity of languages I can understand and generate text in.
Language Strengths and Cultural Significance
My native language is Tamil, a language rich in cultural heritage and literary tradition. The Tamil people treat their language with an almost sacred reverence, considering it as important as their very breath. The term mother tongue is used in Tamil culture to express the deep emotional and cultural connection to the language. Over 2300 years of recorded literature further cements its importance, making Tamil one of the oldest languages in the world with a continuous linguistic record.
Despite numerous attempts by ruling powers to suppress the language, Tamil has held its ground. This resilience is a testament to the enduring love and attachment of the Tamil people to their language. The Tamil language has been a source of pride and unity, even in periods of oppression or when ruling powers tried to dominate through linguistic and cultural means.

My Multilingual Experiences
In addition to my native Tamil, I have a solid foundation in several other languages, making me a true multilingual expert. Having grown up in an environment where multiple languages coexist, I was naturally exposed to and proficient in several languages from an early age. Here are some of the languages I can confidently communicate in:
Proficiency in Other Languages
English and Kiswahili: I regard these as my mother tongues and am most proficient in them. These languages form the core of my communication and writing skills. Kibukusu, Iteso, and Kisabaot: I learned these languages as an infant and can still converse fluently in them, thanks to my early exposure and thorough understanding. French: My French proficiency is moderate, but I need to practice regularly to maintain fluency in the language. Spanish: My Spanish proficiency is better than my French, but it can also benefit from some refreshing. Latin: While my Latin skills have diminished since leaving medical school, I can still read and understand it when needed. Welsh: I learned Welsh from my grandfather and have continued to practice it to keep it alive culturally. Conversational Cantonese: I can hold basic conversations in Cantonese, allowing me to communicate with friends and colleagues in Hong Kong. German and Afrikaans/Dutch: I have a fair grasp of German and a basic understanding of Afrikaans/Dutch, which I use rarely. While I am proud of my language skills, it is also important to note that my vocabulary may not always be as extensive as one might expect. My swearing, while skilled, tends to dry up quickly as I delve deeper into the nuances of specific languages. Nevertheless, my diverse linguistic background gives me a unique perspective and broadens my communication abilities.
