Is the PESIT South Campus Autonomous? Update and Changes

Is the PESIT South Campus Autonomous?

The PESIT (Pondicherry Engineering College South Campus) has officially become an autonomous institution, known as PES University South Campus. This change took place in 2013, and since then, the institution has exercised its autonomy in academic and administrative matters.

From VTU to PES University

Until 2017, the PESIT South Campus was recognized under the VTU (Visvesvaraya Technological University) as a VTU-affiliated college. The last batch for VTU was enrolled in 2017, and this batch will be the last to graduate under VTU recognition. From 2018 onwards, the institution became a part of PES University and no longer follows VTU guidelines.

The Transition Year (2018)

The year 2018 marked a significant transition for the PESIT South Campus. In the CET Seat Matrix for 2018, the college was listed as PES University Electronic City Campus. This change reflected that all examinations would henceforth be conducted by PES University, instead of VTU. Additionally, degrees from the Electronic City campus would no longer be B.E. (Bachelor of Engineering) but would be awarded under the PES University degree program.

As a result of this transition, students at the PESIT South Campus became eligible for scholarships that were previously restricted to those from the Ring Road campus. The new university’s syllabus and examination patterns introduced several changes:

Examinations will be conducted with two ISA (Internal Semester Assessments) and one ESA (End Semester Assessment) each semester. ISAs will be computer-based, aligning with modern educational practices. The college’s academic calendar and opportunities, including internships and placements, are now aligned with PES University’s.

Current Status and Future Prospects

As of now, PESIT South Campus is under PESU (PES University), but it is not an autonomous college itself. However, the institution is anticipated to achieve full autonomy and merge with the PES University's main campus from 2019 onwards. This transition means that it will follow the academic calendar and standards of PES University.

The current admission process for PESIT South Campus includes the COMED-K entrance exam. Despite this, the VTU curriculum followed by the campus is recognized to be of a lower standard compared to the PES University curriculum, which is obtained from AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education).
