Is It Possible to Clear the IAS Preliminary Examination in 4 Months? A 5-Step Guide

Often, individuals ask if it's possible to crack the IAS (Indian Administrative Services) Preliminary Examination in 4 months. The answer is a resounding yes. Many successful candidates manage to do so using a well-strategized plan. However, it's important to note that it takes time and dedication. So, whether you're just starting or have already been preparing for a while, let's dive into the steps you need to take.

Understanding the Challenge

Initial Dilemma: When I began my UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) preparation, I was bombarded with advice that it could be achieved in 5 months, but the reality is quite different. It's easy to think preparation can be done quickly while outside, but once you start, you realize the sheer amount of time and effort required.

The Ryzen Strategy: Cracking the IAS Prelims in 4 Months

So, is it really possible to clear the IAS Preliminary Examination in just 4 months? The answer is a definite yes, but with the right strategy. Here are five simple steps to help you prepare:

Resource Management: In UPSC preparation, vast resources can be overwhelming. Limit your resources to simplify your preparation process. Focus on one book for each subject. Policing and Politics With Lakshminant: For Polity, use only Lakshminant and no other books. This ensures a focused and comprehensive understanding. Mains-Backed History: Study History using only Spectrum books. This book is widely appreciated for its concise and comprehensive coverage of historical events. Geography NCERTs: Geography should be based on NCERTs from class 11th and 12th. NCERTs are a reliable source for detailed and accurate information. Economic and Environmental Insights: For Economics and Environment topics, Mrunal sir's notes are highly recommended. These notes provide a one-stop solution for various economic questions. Science and Tech with Vision IAS: For Science and Tech, rely on Vision IAS magazines. This is because contemporary topics related to Science are often covered in these magazines. Culture and Art: A Gloss Over: Culture and Art should be given less time, focusing on important topics such as Jainism, Buddhism, Ashokan Empire, Krathnadevaraya Dynasty, and Indus Valley Civilization. Medieval India Breaking Down: For Medieval India, study the key dynasties: Harikya, Shunga, Nanda, Maurya, Shunga, and Kanva, along with the Chola, Chera, and Pandya dynasties. For the Mughal dynasty, study the period around 16th century. Current Awareness through PT 365 : Read instances of current affairs from the Vision IAS PT 365 magazine. Given the time constraint, this is a detailed yet time-efficient approach.

Final Steps for Success

1. PYQ Analysis is a Must: Perfect preparation isn't possible without a thorough analysis of previous years' question papers (PYQs). However, it's not about memorizing the answers but understanding the pattern and logical analysis. Analyze at least the last 20 years of PYQs thoroughly.

2. Mock Tests for Practice: Instead of focusing on coaching mock tests for scorer, give 10 mocks to practice. It's crucial to learn from these tests without starting extensive note-taking.

3. Revision is Key: Revisit your books at least three times to ensure you remember the information during the examination. Quality of knowledge over quantity is paramount.

The Bottom Line

While it is challenging, preparing for the IAS Preliminary Examination in 4 months is feasible with the right approach and hard work. Dedication and consistent effort are essential. Aim for around 8-10 hours of focused study each day to succeed.
