An Insight into IIT Gandhinagar: Prospects and Perceptions
As a sophomore student at IIT Gandhinagar (IITGN), I aim to provide an honest and comprehensive overview of the college, focusing on its prospects and the potential for reputation growth in the coming years. This article aims to address key aspects of the college, from campus life and course structures to the importance of technical education and the institute's focus on research and placement.
Campus Life at IIT Gandhinagar
The campus life at IIT Gandhinagar is characterized by an enjoyable and exciting atmosphere. The institute offers a plethora of indoor games, outdoor sports, clubs, cultural events, and even good mess food. As IITGN has transitioned into a permanent campus, this enriches the student experience significantly.
Course Structure and Educational Focus
When it comes to the course structure, IITGN faces some significant deficiencies. According to my understanding, the institute has only incorporated a limited number of humanities and basic science courses, leaving a considerable gap in the technical curriculum. Of the 44 courses, only 13 have technical components. This approach has been criticized by the director, who suggests that the curriculum is designed to impart knowledge in the humanities for the purpose of making citizens.
While it is true that one can learn valuable lessons outside the classroom, imposing such a mandatory curriculum is seen as an unnecessary burden. It further limits the scope for students interested in a strict technical education. Therefore, IITGN must adapt to modern trends in technical education, catering to the needs and aspirations of its students.
Freedom and Student Life
IITGN often prides itself on offering full freedom to its students. However, the reality is quite different. Here are a few aspects that highlight the supposed 'freedom':
You can freely enter and exit the campus at any time, day or night. Boys and girls can move between their hostels at any time without restriction. There are only four elective humanities courses out of eight, with only four open electives available. Other IITs offer a minimum of six or more. You can take any course for an open elective with the approval of a faculty advisor. You are allowed to minor in any branch or pursue honors in your branch, but you have to complete an additional 20 credits (around 5 courses) on top of the curriculum. Obtaining honors in your branch further limits your technical knowledge compared to other IITians who complete their curriculum without honors.Such limitations on academic freedom and choice may not sit well with students who are looking for a more tailored education path.
Internships and Placements
IITGN places a true emphasis on academic internships. However, the challenge lies in securing industrial internships, which students must pursue independently.
"We are not focused on placement. We want you to be human beings first," echoed Jaison Manjaly, the Dean of Student Affairs at IIT Gandhinagar, which was repeated by Sudheer Jain, the Director of IIT Gandhinagar. These comments have left a lasting impression on me and others.
Interestingly, the institution provides international exposure to approximately 40 students through internships or international conferences. This suggests a strong focus on research and innovation, which is reminiscent of the institute's research-focused nature.
Conclusion and Future Prospects
Given the current environment and the specific challenges faced by IIT Gandhinagar, it is crucial for the institute to address the growing concerns over course structure and academic freedom. A reevaluation of the curriculum and a renewed emphasis on technical education and research would significantly enhance its reputation. In ten to fifteen years, if these reforms are realized, IIT Gandhinagar could indeed gain considerable recognition for its technical excellence and research contributions.
