A Comprehensive Review of Tezpur University: Academics, Infrastructure, and Opportunities

Tezpur University, a notable Central University and government-funded institution, offers a rich academic landscape for its students. As a current student in the Department of ECE, I would like to share my honest review about this unique institution.

Academic Overview and Departments

Unlike a typical engineering college, Tezpur University is a comprehensive university. It houses a variety of departments including Engineering, Management, Humanities, and Social Sciences. This diversity allows students to choose from an array of academic programs such as Bachelors of Technology (), Masters of Technology (), Bachelors of Arts (B.A.), Master of Arts (M.A.), Bachelors of Commerce (), and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.).

Admission and Fees

The university offers a competitive admission process. For engineering departments, admission is based on JEE Mains. Around 60% of the seats in each branch are reserved for Permanent Residents of North East India, while the remaining 40% are open to all India quota through JoSSA and CSAB counselling. It's worth noting that the university does not have a specific quota for girls, which can sometimes lead to a gender imbalance in certain branches.

In terms of fees, the university is quite affordable. The semester fees for range around 27,000 INR, and each hostel has a separate monthly mess fee that varies from hostel to hostel. With these affordable fees, students can complete their studies for approximately 4 lakh INR, making it an attractive choice for those seeking higher education.

Infrastructure and Facilities

Tezpur University boasts one of the best infrastructures in the North East. The campus is equipped with numerous facilities, including seven boys' hostels and nine girls' hostels. Two additional hostels are currently under construction. Beyond residence facilities, the university provides a vast range of amenities such as a cricket and football ground, a basketball court, a volleyball court, a lawn tennis court, an indoor stadium for badminton, a swimming pool, a health centre, and a central library.

The campus also features a Kendriya Vidyalay, a small private school, and a shopping complex where students can purchase daily necessities. Each department has its own lab with state-of-the-art equipment, ensuring that students receive comprehensive and practical education.

Academics and Teachers

The academic environment at Tezpur University is rigorous, marked by continuous assessment. A typical semester includes four exams: Test-1, Midsem, Test-II, and Endsem, with respective marks of 25, 40, 25, and 60. The professors are highly qualified, many holding Ph.D. degrees from reputed institutions like NITs, IITs, and other well-respected colleges.

Placements and Career Opportunities

While placements at Tezpur University can be challenging due to its remote location, the university's Technical and Placement (TnP) cell is dedicated to bringing in more companies and providing students with equal opportunities. CSE has an average placement, but ECE tends to perform better. Most students opt for exams like GATE, PSU exams, or pursue higher studies, while some get placed in companies like OIL and Electricity Boards post-campus recruitment drives.

Overall Impression

Overall, Tezpur University is a great choice for students who are willing to work hard and develop themselves. While the university is making significant progress, it still has areas for improvement, such as more active clubs and societies. The mindset of each individual plays a crucial role in shaping their experience here.
